What is intrinsic motivation
A motivation driven by an interest and exists within the individual
Extrinsic motivation ?
Comes from the outside of an individual
Primary needs ?
Required by people to sustain themselves eg. food, water,shelter
Secondary needs ?
Learned from the environment a person lives in
Maslow hierarchy of needs
- self actualisation
- Esteem needs
- social/love
- safety
- psychological needs
Hertzberg: two factor theory
Satisfiers/motivators: Growth, achievement, praise and responsibility
Dissatisfiers/ Hygiene: Salary, pay. status, security
David Mccelland: Theory of needs
Need for achievement, power and affiliation
SMART GOALS
S - Specific M - Measurable A - Agreed R - Realistic T - Time
Positive reinforcement
Consequences that follow a behaviour and are likely to increase that behaviour happening again
eg getting sweets for behaving good
Negative reinforcement
Occurs when an undesirable consequence decreases an individual from behaving the same way again
eg. being punished for behaving badly
Money as a motivator: positives
- It helps motivate employees
- Used to attract, motivate and retain workers
Money as a motivator: negatives
- Only works short term
- Once given the money workers are no longer motivated
