Percentiles Charts Flashcards
Percentiles Charts
Whenever a baby is born, their growth is compared to that of millions of other babies to make sure that they are growing as they should be. This is represented by percentile charts.
The baby’s age (x-axis) and weight (y-axis) can be compared to growth curves for different percentiles of the population.
If a baby is in the 1st percentile, 99% of all other babies at that age are heavier. This could mean that it is developing too slowly, and doctors can then investigate this.
Features of a percentile growth chart:
Percentile curves draw in, age on the -axis, size or weight on the y-axis
What type of cell division occurs in the zone of cell division?
Mitosis
Percentiles Growth Charts
Babies are weighed frequently and compared against percentiles charts to check that they are growing properly.
a baby is in the 95th percentile of weight, how many babies of the same age are the same weight or heavier?
5%
Plant Growth
In plants, the stages of growth happen in three different regions:
Zone of cell division: cells divide by mitosis and new cells are created.
Zone of elongation: where the new cells grow in size.
Zone of differentiation: where the new cells differentiate (become specialised into different types of cells).
