percent comp Flashcards
percent composition
how many ___ of (element) are present in the compound?
Convert grams to moles
exlclusion being hydrates, in which you just calculate grams of water lost
empirical formula
convert grams to moles (if needed, find out how much of that element is individually in the compound by number) and then divide by the element with the smallest molecular mass
Molecular formula
Find empirical mass and then divide it from the molecular mass- that is your multiplying factor, to which you multiply to the empirical formula
percent composition by MASS (INCLUDING HYDRATES)
mass of element/mass of compound x100 (mass is provided, not molecular mass)
finding mass percentage (hydrate?)
Compound x h20
- by subtracting weight of original sample and new sample you can find hydrate mass
convert original mass and hydrate mass from grams to moles and divide by whichever has smallest number of moles
hydrate (empirical formula vs. mass percentage)
percentage is just grams mass
put mass of water over mass of compound. in the event you need to find the coefficient, you find mass of water by subtracting original to present mass and then convert grams to moles for both, then divide by smallest number of moles for emprical formula
