perceived exertion Flashcards

1
Q

perceived exertion

A

subjective intensity of effort, strain, discomfort and or fatigye experienced during physicla exercise
used for monitorinf and regulating physical exertion
easily administered and cost effective tool for intra/inter individual comparisons of subjective feelings

Q

different parts

A

resp/metabolic- ventilation, o2 uptake, metabolic acidosis, skin temp
psychological- mood, anxiety, motivation, task aversion
performance - audience, competitive strategy, competitive milieu, race position
exertional- breathing, skin temp, joint/muscle pain
perceptual response- externalisation of physiological and psychological processes via the afferent system

Q

borg scale

A

15 grade scale from 6-20
starts at 6 due to average RHR of 60 and max HR of 200
heart rate = 10 x RPE (approx)

Q

what scale is best

A

borg is widely accepetd as the gold standard for lab based exercise testing and exercise presciption
shown to be valid and reliable in adult populations, also investigated in clinical groups eg visual impairments
adaptations required to help children interpret scale eg with pictures

Q

exercise modality

A

for a given intesnity of exercise, modality specific training leads to lower RPE for running and after running training
RPE at lactate threshold is comparable
HR and RPE responses when performing the same workload in Watts is 3 different cadences
RPE is affected greatly, HR is much higher at higher rpm

Q

differentiated RPE

A

may be dominance of differentiated RPE when forming overall RPE
influenced by exercise modality, exercise type, level of training
may be percived as harder but it doesnt stress the central system eg if only using 1 muscle group

Q

teleo anticipation

A

implies effort perception may be a feedforward system where exercise intensity is refined based on afferent feedback
eg how long i can keep up a certain workload to the available input info

Q

applications of RPE

A
  • prediction of maximal physical capacity
  • estimation- production for the prescription of exercise
  • prediction of time to exhaustion
  • longitudinal monitoring of training load

Q

prediction

A

maximal exercise tests are physically demanding and may not be safe in clinical or elderly populations
sub maximal linear workload RPE relationship can be extrapolated to provide predictions of maximal capacity

Q

estimation- production trials

A

exercise intensity prescribed at an RPE elicited during an exercise task of a fixed intensity
ps can self regulate intensity to produce the required intensity via adjustments in speed, gradient or resistance

esimtating time to exhaustion

A

constant load exercise 55-70% peak power output in either hot or cold

Q

monitoring training load

A

exertion of session- rate form 1-10- duration in minutes
session RPE= 6x30 mins= 360
for endurance athletes
