Peptides, polypeptides, and proteins Flashcards
1
Q
what is a polypeptide
A
contraining up to about 50 amino acids are referred to as polypeptides
2
Q
What are proteins?
A
contain more than 50 amino acid
3
Q
What are some natural examples of proteins?
A
enzymes
hair
mucles
4
Q
What is the amide functional group?
A
-CONH2
C=O double bond present
5
Q
What is an amine linkage?
A
-CONH-
the amine group of one amino acid can react with the carboxylic acid group of another to form an amide linkage
peptide bond
6
Q
What type of polymers are polypeptides and proteins?
A
condensation polymer because a small molecule (in this case water) is eliminated as each link of the chain forms
7
Q
How does hydrolysis occur?
A
- protein or peptide boiled with hydrochloric acid (conc 6mol dm-3) for about 24 hours
- breaks down to a mixture of all the amino acids that made up the original protein or peptide
- all the peptide linkages are hydrolysed
