Amines Flashcards
What do amines derive from? What is the difference between the derivative and the amine?
- Amines can be thought of as derivatives of ammonia,
- in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms in the ammonia molecule have been replaced by an alkyl or aryl group.
How are they used in industry?
they are very reactive, so they are useful as intermediates in synthesis.
What is the difference between a primary, secondary and tertiary amine?
primary amine has 1 R group replacing a hydrogen atom on the ammonia
secondary has 2 R groups replacing 2 hydrogen atoms on the ammonia
a tertiary amine has 3 R groups pelacing all of the hydrogen atoms on the ammonia
How are amines named? What suffix is used?
amine
What is the name given to C2H5-NH2?
ethylamine
What is the name given to (CH3)2NH?
dimethylamine
What is the general formula of 1°, 2°, and 3° amines?
1° RNH2
2° RR’NH
3° R’R”N
What is the name given to CH3(C3H7)NH?
N-methylpropylamine
different subsituents are written in alphabetical order
What is the root name given to?
one the long chain with the amine group attached to it
the chain is numbered to give the amine unit the lowest possible number
What is C3H7-N-(CH3)2?
N,N - Dimethylpropanamine
