Cell division Flashcards
1
Q
What is a codon?
A
three-base section of DNA
2
Q
What do codons do?
A
each represent a particular amino acid in a protein sequence
3
Q
What is needed for an organsims to function properly?
A
DNA must be copied correctly
4
Q
How can DNA chains be broken?
A
hydrogen bonds are 10x weaker than covalent so that hydrogen bonds can be broken without breaking the back bone
5
Q
What is done in cell division?
A
- hydrogen bonds of the DNA double helix break and the strands unravel
- the cell contrains a mixture of separate nucleotide molecules
- these move in and pair up with the newcly-exposed bases
- this results in two double helix molecule, each exactly the same as the original one
- this is replication
6
Q
How is the information used?
A
- the information in DNA molecules is used to make proteins
- these are the basis of living things
- form structural material
- and enzymes that control the reaction by which other parts of the organism are made
