penis lab Flashcards
what are the accessory glands to the penis?
one prostate gland, two seminal vesicles and two bulbourethral glands
what is the scrotum?
it is a wall composed of skin, the dartos muscle gives it its crinkly appearance
the laters follow as the external spermatic fascia, cremasteric, internal spermatic fascia and they all derive from the abdominal wall
describe the cremasteric reflex
cremaster muscle is a skeletal muscle lying deep to the dermis. in cold weather it’ll contract raising the testis
describe the testis
septum separate lobules. lobules are highly coiled seminiferous tubules. per lobule there is one straight lobule which joins others to form the rete testis.
efferent ductules leave the network to join the epididymis where all the sperm is stored
describe the tunica vaginalis
visceral layer lines testis, parietal lines scrotum, peritoneum sac filled with peritoneal fluid.
describe the epididymis
very tightly coiled tube continuous with ductus deferens (thick smooth muscle). pseudostratified columnar epithelium with stereocilia. increase area for absorption. epididymis also starts process of maturing sperm
describe the blood supply to the testis
the testicular artery is the main blood supply. venous drainage comes from the pampiniform complex drains to the testicular vein and goes to the IVC on the right and renal on the left
describe the seminal vesicles
secrete alkaline viscous fluid to neutralise acidic environment of the vagina.
it also contains fructose to provide the sperm with ATP.
prostaglandins help provide motility and viability
describe the ejaculatory duct
the duct of the seminal vesicle joins with the ductus deferens to form the ejaculatory duct. it penetrates through the prostate gland carrying acidic fluid to help liquefy any coagulated semen
