Development of Uro Flashcards
what does the urogenital tract originate from?
intermediate mesoderm
how do the kidneys develop?
the definitive kidney originates from two sources
metanephros- excretory units
ureteric bud- collecting system
there are 3 primitive structures, pronephros, mesonephros and metanephros
how does the bladder form?
urorectal septum grows forward to divide the cloaca, giving rise to anterior urogenital sinus and posterior rectal canal
the cranial section of the sinus forms the bladder
give the stages of development of the kidneys
pronephros development happens around week 4.
mesonephros appears in the abdominal region
metanephros develops in the pelvic region around week 5, functional at week 11. nephrons continue developing until birth.
development of bladder happens around week 4
what is the difference between the mesonephric (Wolffian) and Paramesonephric ducts?
the mesonephric ducts give rise to the ductus deferens, epididymis, vas deferens and ejaculatory tubes
the paramesonephric ducts give rise to the uterine tube, uterus and vagina
what determines whether the paramesonephric is dominant or not?
if there is the SRY on the Y chromosome of the sex genes then there will be development of the mesonephric ducts. the mesonephric ducts give rise to the testis which release anti-mullerian hormone from sertoli cells which will lead to the degeneration of the paramesonephric ducts
if there is no SRY then the mesonephric ducts will degenerate
describe gonadal development
PGC’s (primordial germ cells) arrive to the gonadal ridge at week 6.
if SRY gene present, leydig cells progress development of testis structures through testosterone whilst sertoli cells regress female structures through anti-mullerian hormone.
Wnt 4- specificies for ovary development.
what is the tunica albuginea?
a dense connective tissue that wraps the testis
