Penicillins Flashcards
Penicillin classification
Based on spectra of activity
Penicillin Administration
Most administered parentally
Penicillin Distribution
Widely distributed and penetrate into the CSF
Penicillin Excretion
Most are excreted by the kidneys. Removed by dialysis except nafcillin and oxacillin
Penicillins Half-Life
Half-life is typically 30 to 90 minutes.
Penicillins Activity
Time-dependent bactericidal activity and post-antibiotic effect (PAE) against most gram-positive organisms. (PCN G and PCN V)
Penicillins Clinical uses
U/LRTI, UTI, CNS and STDs
PCNs Mechanism of action
inhibition of bacterial cell growth by interference with cell wall synthesis.
PCNs Spectrum of activity
binding to and activating the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
PCNs Adverse events
low incidence; most common are hypersensitivity reactions.
