  • UK send more people to prison than any other country in the EU.
  • In 1951, 50/100,000 people in prison.
  • In 2001 risen to 136/100,000.
  • In 2004, UK had highest rate of prison population per 100,000 in the whole of Europe.
  • CJA 2003 introduced tougher community penalties to try and decrease amount of people in prison, but this has failed as it still increased over the next years.
