Prison Population

- UK send more people to prison than any other country in the EU.
- In 1951, 50/100,000 people in prison.
- In 2001 risen to 136/100,000.
- In 2004, UK had highest rate of prison population per 100,000 in the whole of Europe.
- CJA 2003 introduced tougher community penalties to try and decrease amount of people in prison, but this has failed as it still increased over the next years.

- 44.75% of adults reoffended within 1 year of release.
- People with short sentences are twice as likely to reoffend than those with a sentence of 12+ months.
- Adult offenders given community orders are less likely to reoffend than people given custodial sentences.

- There are 4,000 women in prison compared to 82,000 men showing inequality.
- For indictable offences, women are more likely to be given a community sentence or a discharge than a custodial sentence or a fine.
