Pelvis Flashcards
What are the main contents of the pelvis?
rectum, bladder, uterus/vagina (females), prostate (males)
Where is the prostate gland located in males?
at the bottom of the bladder
What is unique about the obturator internus muscle?
it covers the inner surface of the obturator membrane; its fibers coalesce and leave the lesser sciatic foramen, make a 90 degree turn, and insert on the greater trochanter
Which muscles compose the pelvic diaphragm?
coccygeus muscle and levator ani muscles (iliococcygeus, pubococcygeus, puborectalis)
the arc onto which the levator ani inserts on the fascia of the obturator internus
arcus tendinaes
What runs through the levator ani in males vs. females?
- males: urethra only
- females: urethra and vagina
What are the main branches of the external iliac artery that we discussed?
- deep circumflex iliac
- inferior epigastric
Nerve roots for sciatic nerve?
L4-S3
Nerve roots for femoral nerve?
L2-L4 (same as obturator)
Nerve roots for pudendal nerve?
S2-S4 (S2, 3, 4 keeps the junk off the floor)
What innervates the pelvis?
lumbosacral plexus (T12-S5)
Where do lumbar and sacral splanchnics come off of vs. pelvic splanchnics?
- lumbar and sacral: from sympathetic chain
- pelvic: from ventral roots
Space between rectum and uterus where fibroids, tumors, and infections can occur.
rectouterine pouch (aka, pouch of Douglas)
What innervates the uterus?
- sympathetic inn. from hypogastric plexus (T12-L1)
- parasympathetic inn. from pelvic nerves (S1-S4)
Nerve roots for obturator nerve?
L2-L4 (same as femoral)
