Anterior Abdominal Wall / Inguinal Canal Flashcards
What are the two layers of superficial fascia in the abdomen?
- Fatty layer (Camper’s fascia)
- Membranous layer (Scarpa’s fascia)
Innervation of external oblique?
ventral rami of 6 inferior thoracic nerves
Innervation of internal oblique?
ventral rami of 6 inferior thoracic nerves and first lumbar nerves
Innervation of pyramidalis?
iliohypogastric nerve
Innervation of rectus abdominis?
ventral rami of 6 inferior thoracic nerves
Innervation of transverse abdominis?
ventral rami of 6 inferior thoracic nerves and first lumbar nerves
What is the main action of the abdominal muscles?
to compress and support the abdominal viscera (some also flex/rotate the trunk)
What are the 2 major vessels of the rectus sheath?
- Superior epigastric artery
- Inferior epigastric artery
The superior epigastric artery is a branch of______?
internal thoracic artery
The inferior epigastric artery is a branch of______?
external iliac artery
What does the external iliac artery become once it passes beneath the inguinal ligament?
femoral artery
Cutaneous sensation over the abdomen is via which nerves?
- Lower 6 intercostal nerves
- Iliohypogastric and Ilioinguinal nerves
Which is the only functional umbilical fold in the adult body and what does it contain?
Lateral umbilical fold (x2); these folds contain the inferior epigastric artery and vein
What is another name for the inguinal triangle, and what are the boundaries?
Hesselbach’s triangle:
- Lateral boundary: inferior epigastric vessels
- Medial boundary: linea semilunaris
- Inferior boundary: inguinal ligament
What forms the conjoint tendon?
fibers from the transverse abdominis and internal oblique
