Peds Flashcards
Family systems theory concepts-morphostatic principle
Each living system must have some order no matter how undesirable or chaotic. Ex: daily fam rhythms-meals, bedtime, bathing, hail/farewell, pet names. Form maintenance.
Why are fams important?
1) they have significant environmental influence on a young child’s life and development.
2) interventions affect fam
3) laws and service delivery models promote a fam centered approach
4) pro orgs, including AOTA have ID’d competency and created rec guidelines for working with fams
Morphogenetic principle
Fam systems have a capacity for change. I.e. Gaining or losing a member via marriage, divorce, birth and death, and shifting roles of members through marriage, school progression, or aging. Form-evolving.
Equifinality
A morphogenetic feature of living systems is their capacity to evolve along different paths yet arrive at a given “destination.” No single past event predicts a systems current form, nor does any specific current event specifically predict a future form.
Communication skill 1
Solution-focused curiosity and interest- focus on strengths, achievements, and desires rather than probs and deficits. Be non judgmentally interested in them and situations. It allows for support of adaptive morphogenetic potential of family w/o challenging or criticizing current status.
Communication skill 2
Collaborative goal setting- collaborate with family to clarify and develop a common set of goals to help OTPs manage the tx process. Staying close to plan while being able to change it as they need it builds trust and helps them see the OTP as interested in helping them achieve their goals.
Communication skill 3
OTPs acknowledge clients and give feedback, assuring what they are saying is understood.
Continuity
Arrival and departure are most important moments of contact with family- OTP should be solution focused or future oriented.
