Treatment of lows in kids
<5 years = 5g (40ml juice)
5-10 years = 10g (85ml juice)
> 10 years = 15g (125ml juice)
Glucagon treatment
In severe hypoglycaemia
<5 years - 0.5mg
>5 years - 1mg
Mild hypoglycaemia where other treatments are being refused
10mcg/year of age Or 1 unit per year of age
Min dose 20mcg or 2 units
Max dose 150mcg or 15 units
Additional double dose given if BG has not increased in 20min
Leading cause of morbidity and mortality in kids with diabetes
DKA
Occurs in ~40% new onset kids
1 - 10 episodes per 100 patient years with established diabetes
Rates of T1DM females who meet the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder vs those without diabetes
10% vs 4%
Screening for which comorbid conditions are recommended?
- Autoimmune thyroid disease (more common in girls); @ Dx and every 2 years after
- Primary adrenal insufficiency (Addisons disease, in case of unexplained hypoglycaemia and decreasing insulin requirements)
- Celiac Disease ( if associated symptoms occur )
Physical activity recommendations
3 or more times per week, 60 or more min each time
