Pediatric Respiratory Meds Flashcards
What are short acting B2-Adrenergic agonists(short acting bronchodilators)?
- Cause bronchodilation; relax airway smooth muscle
* Given with metered dose inhaler with a spacer or by nebulizer, not orally
What are the 2 short acting bronchodilators?
- albuterol (Alba)
* levalbuterol (Levitates)
What are the side effects of short acting bronchodilators?
- jitteriness
- muscle cramps
- arrhythmias
When are short acting bronchodilators indicated?
For the therapeutic management of acute symptoms and exacerbations of asthma
How often are short acting bronchodilators used per day?
Q 6 hours or 4 times per day
What are inhaled corticosteroids?
- Anti-inflammatory to reduce frequency/severity of exacerbations
- Given with metered dose inhaler with a spacer or by nebulizer
What are the 2 inhaled corticosteroids?
- beclomethasone (Be)
* budesonide (Buddies)
When are inhaled corticosteroids indicated?
For the prevention of asthma exacerbations
What are long acting B2-Adrenergic agonists(long acting bronchodilator)?
•Cause bronchodilation; relax airway smooth muscle
What are the 2 long acting bronchodilators?
- formoterol (Formula)
* salmeterol (Salmon)
What are 2 considerations to keep in mind about long acting bronchodilators?
- Not used for acute exacerbations
* Only used as combined drug with corticosteroid
What are leukotriene receptor antagonists?
Decreases inflammation by interfering with leukotrienes
What are the 2 leukotriene receptor antagonists
- montelukast (Monte)
* zarfirlukast (Zarfir)
