Who are pediatric patients?
Infancy to 15yrs; Neonates, Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers, School Age
Developmental approach from birth to 6 months
Not fearful of strangers
Developmental approach from 6 months to 3 years
Fear of strangers; toddler clinging to parent
Developmental approach from 3 years to 6 years
Increased verbal activity; period of fantasy play
Developmental approach from 6 years to 12 years
Cognitive growth; cause and effect
Developmental approach from 12 years - 19 years
Age of identity; heighten awareness of body
Infant stage
Birth - 1yr; Soothing voice/avoid loud stimuli; Develop memories, ideas & feelings (White Coat Syndrome); 8 months: Separation Anxiety
Toddler stage
1 to 3 years; Cannot understand more than one word, concerned with events in the moment; white coat syndrome & separation from parents; do not like immobilization
Preschooler stage
3 to 5 years; No logical reasoning/does not understand cause & effect; favorite question is why; Must be actively involved (see, hear or touch to understand)
School age stage
5 to 10 years; Develop fears; accommodating/eager to please; maintain privacy; 7 years: think logically & analyze situation
What is the greatest danger for premature infants?
Hypothermia
What are common immobilizers?
Sheet, commercial, tam-em board, sandbags, compression band/head clamp
What is a Pigg-O-Stat?
Commercial immobilizer for upright chest/abdomen xrays; 2 - 3 years
What is a tam-em board?
Baby board/infantainer; velcro straps to hold in place; chest/abdomen imaging
What are compression bands/head clamps for?
Prevent movement of entire body and restricts head movement
