What are 5 most common health complaints of elderly?
Weight gain, Fatigue, Loss of Bone Mass, Joint Stiffness, Loneliness
1st Signs of Aging
Skin wrinkles, skin on back of hands/arms are thin & fragile, Vascularity of dermis decreases (pale skin), thin, brittle hair
What are head and neck signs of aging?
Adaptation from light to dark areas diminish, loss of ability to focus on near objects, hearing loss (men), kyphosis, sense of taste & smell decreases
What is the most frequent lung infection?
Pneumonia - leading cause of death in elderly
What is Postural/Orthostatic hypotension?
Rapid position change resulting in dizziness & can lead to falling; drop in systolic pressure of 20-30mmHg
What are Cardiovascular issues for elderly?
Most common cause of death worldwide; heart rate during exercise decreases with age (SOB); Increase systolic BP (Heart Disease/Stroke); Declines in coronary blood flow
What are Gastrointestinal issues for elderly?
Esophageal/Gastric motility declines (dry mouth, less swallowing reflex); Dentures; Loss of sphincter control
What are Musculoskeletal issues for elderly?
Bone mass reduced resulting in weaker bones (Women 4x); Decrease in muscle strength; Intervertebral discs shrink / vertebrae collapse
What is enlarged prostate and who does it affect?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia; 70% of men over 70yrs
What is prostate cancer and who does it affect?
3rd most common cause of cancer deaths in men; 80% tumors in men over 65yrs
What are decubitus ulcers? What areas are most affected?
Pressure sores; heels, ankles, elbow & lateral hips
