Pectoral region, axilla, brachial plexus Flashcards
What is the origin of the pectoralis major?
- Clavicle head – anterior surface of sternal half
of clavicle - Sternal head – half the breadth of anterior surface of sternum down to level of 6thcartilage
- 1st to 6th costal cartilages
- Aponeurosis of external oblique muscle.
What is the insertion of the pectoralis major?
Lateral lip of intertubercular groove of humerus
What is the nerve supply of the pectoralis major?
Medial and lateral pectoral nerves
What is the action of the pectoralis major?
Adduction and medial rotation of humerus
What is the origin of the pectoralis minor?
upper margins and outer surfaces of the third
to fifth ribs, near costal cartilages
What is the insertion of the pectoralis minor?
Medial border and upper surface of coracoid process of scapula
What is the nerve supply of the pectoralis minor?
medial pectoral nerves
What is the action of the pectoralis minor?
Stabilizes scapula by drawing it forwards around the chest wall (Protraction)
*axillary fossa
- Pyramidal space located between upper limb & thorax
- Communicating with posterior triangle of neck
- Transmits neurovascular structures & lymph vessels/nodes
What are the boundaries of the axillary fossa?
- Anterior: Pectoralis major & minor, subclavius & clavipectorial fascia
- Posterior: Teres major, subscapularis, Latissmus dorsi
- Lateral: Humerus: upper part of shaft with intertubercular groove
- Medial: Serratus anterior (5-5 digitations), intercostal muscle at 4th intercostal space
- Floor (Base): Axillary fascia and skin
- Apex: Bounded by clavicle, scapula, outer border of 1st rib; directed towards root of neck
The supraclavicular branches consists of….
The roots and trunks
The infraclavicular branches consists of…..
the lateral, posterior and medial cords
