Anatomy of foot & lower limb joints Flashcards
Name the different tarsals.
Calcaneus
Talus
Navicular
Cuboid
Intermediate, lateral, medial Cuneiforms
Name the different parts of the Phalanges
Proximal
Middle
Distal
*Extrinsic Muscles
Arise from the anterior, posterior and lateral compartments of the leg.
They are mainly responsible for actions such as eversion, inversion, plantarflexion and dorsiflexion of the foot.
*Intrinsic muscles
Are located within the foot and are responsible for the fine motor actions of the foot, for example movement of individual digits.
Name the 2 intrinsic muscles located within the dorsum of the foot.
Extensor Digitorum Brevis
Extensor Hallucis Brevis
What are the attachments and actions of the Extensor Digitorum Brevis?
- Originates from the calcaneus and inferior extensor retinaculum. It attaches onto the long extensor tendons of the medial four toes.
- Extension of the lateral four toes
Name the attachments and action of the Extensor Hallucis Brevis.
- Originates from the calcaneus and inferior extensor retinaculum. It attaches to the base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe.
- Extension of the great toe.
Name the 2 different groups of ligaments in the hip joint.
- Intrascapular
- Extrascapular
Name the one Intrascapular ligament
Ligament of head of femur
Name the different Extrascapular ligaments
Iliofemoral ligament
Pubofemoral
Ischiofemoral
*Medial and lateral menisci
Fibrocartilage structures in the knee
What are the functions of the knee menisci?
- Deepen the articular surface of the tibia, thus increasing stability of the joint
- Shock absorbers, by increasing surface area to further dissipate forces.
Name the major ligaments in the knee joint
Patellar ligament
Collateral Ligament
Cruciate ligament
What is the attachment of the Medial Ligament in the ankle?
Attached to the medial malleolus
Extensor digitorum brevis and extensor hallucis brevis is innervated by which nerve?
fibular nerve
