PEARLA Flashcards
What is the neurological assessment?
PEARLA
What does PEARLA stand for?
Pupils equal and reactive to light, accomodation.
Why do nurses use PEARLA?
To check the appearance and function of your pupils. Detect conditions.
What are the normal parameters for pupils?
2 - 4 mm in diameter in light, 4-8mm in diameter in the dark.
What is the “P” test?
Your pupils should shrink (constrict) when a bright light is placed right in front of your eye. And widen (dilate) in the dark.
What is the E test?
Your pupils should be the same size and be round like circles.
What is the R test?
Your eyes should be reactive.
What is the L test?
When light shone is eye pupils both should constrict.
What is the A test?
Accomodation is your eyes ability to change focus. Healthy pupils dilate when you look at something far away and shrink when you look at things that are near.
Now complete a PEARLA test?
- Note shape and size.
- Patient looks straight ahead, while you shone the light in each eye. Make sure the other is shielded.
- Then you will ask them to follow a pen while you move it close and and far away.
- Note if the pupils constricts or dilates.
