What are the instructions for peak expiratory flow?
A
- Wash your hands
- Zero device
- Patient should stand
- Maximum inspiration
- Airtight seal, peak flow level
- Hold horizontally so that fingers do not tough sliding component
- Forcefully exhale as rapidly as possible into the meter
- Read from scale
- Record best of three attempts
- Dispose of mouthpiece
- Calculate PEFR

Describe how a patient should track their peak expiratory flow
A
- Perform technique
- Explain X and Y axis
- 3 x a day for two weeks, then review
- Readings taken before and 15 minutes after beta agonist are sometimes helpful
- Explain expected PEFR (male normal is up to -100, female is 85)
- Show an example of a completed chart
- Check understanding of asthma
