What did the treaty do?
Punished Germany for its role in starting ww1 and the damage to life and property
What was the Germans view of the treaty?
It was hated across the political spectrum
What had most expected?
Negotiated peace settlement based on Wilson’s 14 point plan
How would the German people describe the treaty?
‘Dictated peace’

The fall of the scheidmann gov
What were the terms of the treaty?
Land- lost french, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Lithuania
Army- severely restricted; 100,000 men limit - navy only allowed 6 battleships and no submarines
Money - would have to pay reparations
Blame - had to take blame for ww1
Why was there an occupation of the Rhineland?
To ensure Germany stuck to the treaty
What wasn’t Germany allowed to do?
Join the League of Nations
Why was the ‘war guilt clause’ unfair?
Germans thought they were fighting a just war
What was the view of pro republican parties? (SPD, DDP and centre)
No alternative - as Germany was too weak to resist
What was the view of anti-republican parties (DVP, DNVP)
Act of betrayal - STAB IN BACK
What was the french view?
Germany was treated too leniently
What was the British view?
General satisfaction that Germany had been weakened

Widespread feeling that Germany had been unfairly treated
