What does peace mean?
Peace does not just mean ‘no war’. It involves living comfortably without fear or conflict.
Example: Citizens may lack food or fear the police even in a non-war country.
What is required for a peaceful society?
In a peaceful society, everybody has enough to live comfortably, eliminating the need for conflict and arguments.
What should be ensured when fighting a war?
When we fight a war, we should ensure that we bring about peace for citizens from both sides.
What does Isaiah say about peace?
Isaiah writes about a time when God is in charge: ‘They will turn their swords into ploughs . . . Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore’.
What is justice?
Justice means that everybody gets what they deserve, such as freedom for criminals and decent wages for hard-working citizens.
When is it necessary to fight against injustice?
It is sometimes necessary to fight against injustice, as demonstrated by Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s stand against Nazi treatment of marginalized groups.
What does Isaiah say about injustice?
In the Old Testament, Isaiah gave the people a message from God: ‘loose the chains of injustice . . . set the oppressed free’.
What does it mean to be made in the image of God?
Everybody deserves to be treated equally because we are all ‘made in the image of God’.

What is reconciliation?
Reconciliation takes place after a conflict and involves rebuilding a relationship with your enemy.
What must be done regarding war crimes?
War crimes on both sides must be tried, prisoners of war released, and peace treaties should not unfairly punish one side.
What support should countries receive after conflict?
Countries should receive help to rebuild their infrastructure, including roads, schools, hospitals, and justice systems.
What does Saint Paul say about overcoming evil?
Saint Paul writes “Do not repay evil for evil . . . but overcome evil with good.”
What did Jesus say about loving your neighbor?
Jesus said ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’. This should be part of the reconciliation process.
