PEA - Content Flashcards
What is Aquaculture?
Farming aquatic species in controlled or semi-controlled conditions
What does nature mean?
What, why and how we are growing it
What can be used to describe the nature of aquaculture?
- Marine/saltwater (Mariculture), estuary or freshwater (In-Land)
- In-situ or ex-situ
- Fin-fish, Crustacean, Molluscs or plants (usually algae)
- For Human consumption, fishmeal, fish oil or for local consumption or for export earning
- Practised in LICs or HICs
What are the 4 types of economic activity?
- Primary - Any industry involved in the extraction and production of raw materials
- Secondary - Industries that produce a finished, usable product or are involved in construction
- Tertiary - Industries involved with the provision of services to other businesses as well as final consumers
- Quaternary - Industries associated with either the intellectual or knowledge-based economy
What are spatial patterns?
Where are they being grown and why?
Name 1 spatial pattern of aquaculture
Uneven distribution but concentrated in Asia. Minimal activity in Africa
What are some future directions of aquaculture?
- More mouths to feed
- Demand for protein
- Decreasing arable land available
- Declining marine fishes stocks
- Climate change impacts
- Benefits for sustainability (Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture)
Why is aquaculture spatially based in LICs?
Many aquaculture industries in developed nations suffer from low availability of high-paying jobs combined with a lack of appropriately trained staff willing to work in menial positions for low wages.
What are examples of ecological challenges to aquaculture?
Pathogens, parasites, and pests (PPP), pollution, harmful algal blooms, and climate change
What are methods that show potential to improve aquaculture?
Future directions
Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture has shown high bioremediation capacity but has demonstrated limited commercial success globally. Recirculating aquaculture systemsand offshore aquaculture have promising growth potential. Aquaponics using nutrient-rich water)
What are some health benefits of seafood?
Low fat, omega-3 fatty acids. calcium and iodine
