EAR - Traditional and Contemporary Management Flashcards
How many indigenous groups are there around the GBR and give an example
There are over 70 and one example is the Gimuy-walubarra yidi in Cairns. Their totemic animal is a scorpion.
What are some concepts linked to traditional management in the GBR?
- Totems
- Nomadic lifestyles
- Hunting seasons
What are some ways in which contemporary and traditional management strategies overlap in the GBR?
TUMRA (Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreement) and IRAC (Indigenous reef advisory committee) agreements
What is an example of a social contemporary management strategy undertaken by the GBRMPA and a stat?
What are two categories that should be mentioned when addressing contemporary management?
The SLEEPT acronym (social, legal, ecological, economic, political, technological), as well as scale (local, regional or global)
SLEEPT is not neccessary but good for examples
How is traditional management used in the TRHS
Indonesia is home to some 1000 ethnic groups. Many indigenous groups such as Batak tribes have always used an agroforestry system of mixed farming and hunting/gathering.
However, more nomadic indigenous groups such as the Orang Rimba also exist. Their nomadic lifestyle requires extensive forest in which to practice cultures.
What are some concepts within traditional management in the TRHS
- Nomadic lifestyles (Orang Rimba)
- “Adat” customary common land use rules
- Totems
- Animist belief systems
- Deep cultural ecological knowledge
What are some concepts within traditional management in the GBR
- Nomadic lifestyles
- Mosaic burning
- Closed seasons
- Totems
- Hunting seasons
- Intense cultural ecological knowledge
How is traditional management used in the GBR
Traditional management is highly interwoven, with care of land being of equal importance to care of reef.
Gimuy-walubarra yidi at Cairns have a number of totemic relationships and territorial practices.
Knowledge of Womies for extended reef activities, now play role in the protection of the reef
* Includes ecological wisdom
What are some challenged to contemporary management
- Tourism impacts vs tourism benefits (e.g. Fitzroy Island)
- Management of land-based environments and industries (Sugar cane, Banana and Aquaculture) - environmental impact assessments and artificial wetlands
- Political challenges of balancing reef management with urban development, primary industries and mineral extraction are significant
How effective has contemporary management been in the GBR
International attention is also useful in highlighting Government inaction.
