EAR - Introduction material Flashcards
What area does the GBR cover and how long is it
GBR covers 347,800 square kilometres and over 2300km long
What area does the TRHS cover
25,000 square kilometres
How many species are there in the TRHS?
10,000 flora species, 201 mammal species and 580 bird species
How many species are there in the GBR?
GBR has over 400 species of coral and 1600 species of fish (multiple pathways of nutrient cycling) over 9000 total species - unesco
How much shallow coral was killed off my which bleaching event?
A third of shallow coral was killed by 2016 bleaching events in Port Douglas
How long does it take coral to recover?
Takes 10 years for the fastest coral to recover, but can be disrupted by the increased frequency of bleaching events
Note this will affect biodiversity, only fast recovering corals
What are the temperature requirements of coral
23-29 degrees celsius
What is the frequency of recent bleaching events?
5 bleaching events since 2000 and 4 in the past 6 years
What perceptage of corals are under threat from natural stresses and global warming
The Great Barrier Reef Foundation states that globally 75% of reefs are under threat from natural stresses and global warming
What percentage of excess energy in the climate system is absorbed by the ocean?
In the decade 2009-2018, the ocean absorbed around 23% of annual CO2 emissions, cushioning the impacts of climate change but increasing ocean acidity
At what rate are coral reefs projected to decline at 2 degrees warming
Coral reefs are projected to decline to less than 1% at 2°C warming
How much of the TRHS has been deforested in the past 22 years?
50%/12 million hectares - WWF
How much area does the Sumatran Tiger require to roam?
25 000 hectares
What are Sumatran Rhinoceroses the role dispersers of?
35% of fruits
What percentage of the TRHS is within protected areas?
7% - OneEarth.org
