Possible INDICATIONS OF A CELLAR FIRE:?

A
  • fire or smoke venting from cellar window
  • smoke pushing from chimney (especially during warm weather)
  • high heat and heavy smoke with no visible fire on the first floor
  • very hot floorboards on the 1st floor or smoke showing from baseboard areas on the first floor
  • SMOKE FROM ATTIC WINDOWS OR LOUVERED VENTS (balloon frame construction)

Q

Cellar fires in dwellings with BALLON CONSTRUCTION, may extend to the attic via hidden voids….?

A

units operating ABOVE CELLAR, must stretch enough hoseline to reach UPPER FLOORS

-intermediate floors must be checked before a line is committed to top floor

Q

Reasons?

A
  • unable to quickly access or locate secondary cellar entrance and unable to advance down the interior cellar stair
  • unable to locate any cellar entrance
  • serious or advanced cellar fire
  • cellar fire involving lightweight construction

THIS SHOULD ONLY BE ATTEMPTED WHEN NO MEMBER ARE OPERATING IN THE CELLAR

13
Q

The primary consideration for members operating on the first floor above a cellar fire is to…? (regards to operation of hoseline into cellar window)

A

CLOSE THE INTERIOR CELLAR DOOR at the top of the stairs

following options for safety of these members:

  • operated under the protection of a charged hoseline
  • secure an area of refuge, ensuring ready means of egress
  • exiting the building

16
Q

Bilco Doors..?

A

may cover an exterior cellar entrance
-should not be utilized for hoseline placement (extensive forcible entry/indicative of an unoccupied cellar)…UNLESS IT IS THE ONLY OPTION

17
Q

What factors preclude the descent of the first hoseline down the interior cellar stairs..?

A
  • HIGH HEAT at top of the stairs
  • QUESTIONABLE stability of stairway
  • initial size up indicating serious fire condition
18
Q

What is the paramount concern in making decision to advance down interior cellar stairs?

A

SAFEY OF MEMBERS

19
Q

If first hoseline is ADVANCED THROUGH MAIN ENTRANCE, but DOES NOT ADVANCE INTO THE CELLAR…it will?

A

MAINTAIN ITS POSITION ON 1ST FLOOR

  • protect interior stairs leading to the floors above
  • protect members conducting searches on the first floor and above
  • extinguish any fire extending from cellar

CONTROL OF INTERIOR CELLAR DOOR IS CRITICAL

FIRST HOSELINE WILL REMAIN ON 1ST FLOOR UNITL CELLAR FIRE IS CONTROLLED

20
Q

Repositioning the FIRST HOSELINE that was stretched through main entrance on the first floor to a secondary entrance…?

A

ONLY made by Acting Chief Officer/Chief Officer

LADDER company member operating on 1st floor MUST BE WITHDRAWN before 1st line is repositioned (forcible entry team will operated with engine company to advance hoseline via secondary entrance)

members operating on UPPER FLOORS may also be withdrawn TO A SAFE AREA if NO PORTABLE LADDERS ARE POSITIONED AND READILY AVAILABLE

21
Q

Cellar Fire- 2nd HOSELINE?

A

initially positioned and charged outside of fire building as a backup for the fist hoseline. Not needed as backup, it can be used to extinguish fire that extends to floors above or positioned per IC. Enough hoseline for possible advancement into SECONDARY CELLAR ENTRANCE

options of 2nd line per IC:

  • backing up first hoseline
  • used for exposure protection
  • exposure
  • auto exposure
  • 1st floor through main entrance door
  • enter cellar via 2nd entrance
  • apply water in cellar window
22
Q

Cellar Fire- 3rd line…

A

positioned and charged at the front of the building-operated by orders of IC

23
Q

First Floor Fire…First Line..?

A

main entrance door to the first floor
(1st Ladder will proceed through main entrance..check that fire did not start in cellar before committing first hoseline)

24
Q

First Floor Fire..2nd Line?

A

backup first line…if not needed, can be used for cellar, upper floors , or in exposures

25
Q

First Floor fire… 3rd line?

A

Ordered by IC

26
Q

Upper Floor Fires…1st line?

A

main entrance to fire (1st ladder should ensure fire did not start on lower floor or cellar, BEFORE committing first hoseline)

27
Q

Upper Floor Fire…2nd line?

A

back up..if not needed- cellar, other floors, exposures

28
Q

upper floor- 3rd line?

A

ordered by IC

29
Q

BUILDING FULLY INVOLVED ?

A
  • back stretch to hydrant..drop 2 handlines
  • maintain front of building for TOWER LADDER
  • CONSIDER STRETCHING A 2 1/2” LINE for faster knockdown, reach of stream, increased volume of water and exposure protection
  • operate on exterior before entering building
30
Q

Wind Impacted Fire in PD or heavily involved first floor fire in Queen Anne?

A

consider 2 1/2” line

31
Q

Exposure protection..?

A
  • fire lapping out of window or burning on exterior, presents exposure problem
  • underside of eaves and deteriorated siding may allow for fire extension
32
Q

Units operating hoseline to extinguish fire on exterior?

A

should sweep stream across the face of the building, STARTING AT TOP, SO THE WATER CASCADES DOWN THE EXTERIOR

-consider 2 1/2” line

33
Q

PD’s have limited space at ground level?

A

ground level- 6-8 feet

roof level –2-3 feet

34
Q

What’s is a good practice at PD fires;ESPECiAlly serious cellar fires?

A

Have a precautionary CHARGED hose line positioned near the front of the building
