what do you want to ask in order to explore the symptoms of cough
timing: when did it start, acute/gradual onset, duration, progression, intermittent or continuous
cough: productive or not, triggers ie nocturnal
sputum: how much, how often, colour, consistency, nay blood
Haemoptysis: volume, fresh or altered, frequency
what relevant systems review questions would you ask
general: fever, sweats, weight loss
cardioresp: chest pain, palpitations, SOB/wheeze, leg swelling
name the key differentials of a cough
URTI/LRTI/ pneumonia asthma post nasal drip COPD pulmonary embolism lung tumour
others: GORD, smoking, LVF, drugs (eg ACEi), bronchiectasis, ILD, sarcoidosis/TB, cystic fibrosis
what are the clues/symptoms for the following disease:
URTI/LRTI/pneumonia
acute cough and sputum
may be associated with SOB
systemic symptoms such as fever
what are the clues/symptoms for the following disease:
asthma
nocturnal cough
intermitent wheeze
diurnal variation
exacerbating factors eg exercise, pets
