Pavlov Flashcards
What approach did Pavlov use?
The behaviorist approach
What was Pavlov’s theory of learning?
Classical conditioning
He suggested that behaviors can be learned through the association between different stimuli
What is classical conditioning?
Learning to associate an unconditioned stimulus that already brings out a particular response, with a new conditioned stimulus so that the new stimulus brings out the same response
What was Pavlov’s experiment?
He conditioned dogs to salivate in response to the sound of a bell
How did Pavlov carry out his experiment?
Fitted dogs with a device to count the drops of saliva
Dogs were presented with food and they salivated
Then he introduced a bell, ringing it just before he gave the food to the dogs
He repeated many times
Eventually he introduced the bell on its own and the dogs had the same response (salivation)
In Pavlov’s dog experiment, what was the unconditioned stimulus?
The food
In Pavlov’s dog experiment, what was the unconditioned response?
Salivation
In Pavlov’s dog experiment, what was the neutral stimulus?
The bell
In Pavlov’s dog experiment, what was the conditioned stimulus?
The bell
In Pavlov’s dog experiment, what was the conditioned response?
Salivation
Evaluation of behaviorist approach
What was good about their studies?
Scientific (controlled and standardized conditions)
Real life applications
Evaluation of behaviourist approach
What was bad about their studies?
Mechanistic view - ignores a possible middle process between stimulus and response
Deterministic
Reductionist
Rewards and punishments are subjective
