Paul's Gouge Flashcards
Review VFR sectional as well as AOPA airport signage flashcards
What is SRM
Single-pilot resource management
Much like CRM (effectively and efficiently utilizing all resources available) except you’re down a resource which of course would be a second pilot
IMSAFE
Illness

Stress
Alcohol
Fatigue
Emotions
Special use airspace
MOA
Controlled firing area
Prohibited
Restricted
Alert
Warning
National security
National forest
Can you fly through a restricted area?
If the area is not active (‘cold’) or if you have permission from the operator
What is a stall
Exceeding the critical AOA
Can you enter a spin without being stalled
No
What is AOA
AOA is the angle between the chord line of the airfoil and the relative wind
What is chord line
The line from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the wing
What is the critical AOA
Aerodynamic constant for an airfoil in a given configuration
The airplane will ALWAYS stall when the critical AOA has been exceeded
What is pressure altitude
The height above the standard datum plane
Setting the altimeter to 29.92 will give you the pressure altitude
Know how to calculate it
Effects of density altitude
When DA is high, less air is moving through the engine and being pushed by the prop thus producing less thrust
Less air is flowing over the wings thus producing less lift
A higher TA will be required to reach Vr increasing T/O roll
TA will be higher than indicated increasing our landing roll
A high DA will have an overall negative impact on performance
Effects of a forward vs aft CG
Forward
Stall speed increases
Stall recovery is easier
Cruise AOA is higher
Cruise speed is slower
Less fuel efficient
Stability increases
Maneuverability decreases
Aft
Inverse of forward
What is a cold front and what kind of weather would you expect from one
ARROW P
Documents, Inspections, Equipment

Inspections (progressive/100hr)
Altimeter w/in 24 ca mo
Transponder w/in 24 ca mo
ELT every 12 ca mo
Static system w/in 24 ca mo
Who can preform an annual vs a 100 hour
Annual: IA
100 hour: IA or AP
When can you test an ELT and when does it need to be replaced
During the first five minutes after the hour
Every 12 ca mo it must be inspected
Replaced after 1 hour of cumulative usage or w/in half of the battery life
Who should you go to with questions about okay to use medication
Your AME
What do you need to do before sending a student pilot on a solo XC
Applicable endorsements
Review their flight plan, make sure they have complied with FAR 91.103 (preflight action, NWKRAFT)
What is hypoxia
A person becomes hypoxic when, for a variety of reasons, their brain and organs have been deprived of oxygen
Types of hypoxia
Hypoxic
Hypemic
Histotoxic
Stagnant
If you’re drunk, would you be more drunk on the ground or in the air
I hopefully wouldn’t be flying but you would be much more drunk at altitude than on the ground
What is a TFR
Temporary flight restriction
Can you fly through a TFR
If you have the clearance to, yes but otherwise no
Do TFRs have a shape
Usually they’re circles but they are custom to the situation
When are TFR’s not a circle
When it would be impractical, like a firefighting TFR
What are the different light-gun signals on the ground vs in flight
What is wake turbulence and how does it behave
The wingtip vortices left behind by landing aircraft, most notable when heavy, clean, and slow
They sink (several hundred feet per minute) and move with the wind, it typically takes about 3-5 minutes for them to dissipate
What is LAHSO
Do you have to accept it
If you accept it, must you comply with it
Land and hold short operations
You are not obligated to accept a LAHSO
You must comply with the clearance upon acceptance unless the safety of flight is threatened
Can a student pilot accept LAHSO
No
What do the weather minimums need to be at in order to accept LAHSO
VFR day fuel requirements
To your destination, and 30 minutes thereafter at cruise fuel burn
How do you avoid wake turbulence
Land after the preceding aircrafts touch down point
Takeoff before the preceding aircrafts touchdown point
Wait for the vortices to dissipate
Sidestep the runway/approach path
Accident vs incident
Who makes the performance charts we use for our calculations

When you give a student a solo endorsement what are some limitations you might add to the endorsement
It’s only valid for that day
What is positive aircraft control
Aviate, navigate, communicate
Positive transfer of controls
Your controls, my controls, your controls
Verbal, visual, feel
What is the difference between max elevation of a VFR chart vs IFR chart
VFR is rounded to the nearest 100’
IFR requires 1000’ clearance for non-mountainous terrain and 2000’ clearance for mountainous terrain
When is the ILS critical in effect
If towered you’ll be asked to hold short
800’ and 2sm
Where are you most likely to spin in the traffic pattern with a student
Turning base to final
If you were to do a go around with a student, how are you going to help your student maintain centerline
Remind them that they’re going to need a lot of right rudder
Left turning tendencies are greater at slow airspeed, high AOA configurations such as a go around
Is the VFR sectional set to true north
Yes
How do you convert true course to magnetic course
What are isogonic lines
Lines of magnetic variation, back home it’s -11
