Personal Knowing
Synthesis of perceptions and being with self. developed through art, meditation, dance, music, stories, other expressions. Living and nonliving people or things. Insights through dreams and reflective practices: symbols images, and other connections.
Empirical Knowing
Science of nursing. Expressed in models and theories. Direct observation, measurement, and verification
Aesthetic Knowing
Explores experiences and meaning in life and self: authentic presence, nurse being facilitator of healing, artfulness of healing environment. Combo of knowledge, experience, instinct, intuition that connects nurse with client in order to explore meaning. Calls forth resources and inner strengths to facilitate healing process.
Ethical Knowing
Moral Knowledge that focuses on behaviors, expressions, dimensions of morality and ethics. Valuing and Clarifying situations to create formal moral and ethical behaviors with legal duties. Respect for person, family, community. Encourages constructiveness and relationships that enhance attentiveness, responsiveness, communication, moral action.
Not Knowing
Capacity to use healing presence, open to spontaneous moments with no preconceived answers or goals. Engages authenticity, mindfulness, openness, receptivity, surprise, mystery, discovery. Allows new solutions, possibilities, insights to emerge. Acknowledges patterns that may not be understood.
Sociopolitical Knowing
Important contextual variables of social, economic, geographic, cultural, political, historical, and other key factors of theoretical, evidence based research. Informed critique and social justice for undeserved voices. Protocol to reduce health disparities.
