Patterns Of Inheritance Ch. 10 Flashcards
Define polygenic
Caused by more than one gene; typically expressed as a continuum of possible phenotypes.
Define evolution
Descent with modification
Define population
Interbreeding members of the same species
Define Gene pool
The populations entire collection of genes and their alleles
Define allele frequency’s
Alleles frequency is calculated as the number of copies of that Allele divided by the total number of alleles in a population
What are the two subcategories of evolution?
Microevolution and macroevolution
What is convergent evolution?
Two species that live on opposite sides of the planet may never the less share characteristics because they evolved in similar environmental conditions
What is natural selection?
Differential reproduction of organisms based on inherited traits
What is artificial selection
Selective reading strategy in which a human allows only organisms with desired traits reproduce
Define genotype frequency
Number of individuals of one genotype divided by the number of individuals in the population
What is gene flow
The movement of alleles between populations
Describe the Hardy Weinberg equilibrium
- natural selection does not occur
- mutations do not occur
- the population is infinitely large or at least large enough to illuminate random changes in allele frequency’s
- individuals made at random
- individuals do not migrate into or out of the population
What is genetic drift
A change in allele frequency is that occurs purely by chance
What are the three different directions of natural selection
Directional selection
Disruptive selection
Stabilizing selection
