Patterns of Human Settlement Flashcards
Concentric Circle Theory - developed in 1925 and states that cities grow in a series of outward rings and land use is based on distance from downtown - What are the five rings
Circle Theory - Central Business District - Industrial - Transition (Mixed use and low income housing) - middle class housing - higher income housing
this theory was developed by Homer Hoyt in 1939 - it argued that land uses vary based on transportation routes - the city as a result will create a series of sectors radiating out from the center of the city
Sector Theory
This theory was developed by Harris and Illman in 1945 and argued that cities develop in a series of specific land use nuclei - a land use nucleus is formed because of accessibility to natural resources, clustering of similar uses, land prices, and the repelling power of land uses
Multiple Nuclei Theory
This theory was developed by Walter Christaller in 1933 and states that there is a minimum market threshold to bring a firm to a city and there is a maximum range of people who are willing to travel to receive goods and services. This theory also provides a way of understanding the hierarchy of retail establishments in cities (nail salons every block, grocery store every ten blocks, a large shopping center servicing a much larger area)
Central Place Theory
