- Intended sounds are more likely to be replaced by similar sounds
- Sounds embedded in similar phonological environments are more likely to be exchanged
- When they result in non-words, very likely to look like “possible words”
- More likely to replace rare sounds with common ones
- Sound exchanges, normally involve sounds that appear in the same position within a syllable
