Patricia Benner
Benner adapted _____________ of skill acquisition. Benner applied it to her work “From Novice to Expert.”
Hubert Dreyfus Model
Benner’s model is situational and describes five levels of skill acquisition and development.
N – NOVICE
AB – ADVANCE BEGINNER
C – COMPETENT
P – PROFICIENT
E – EXPERT
*The person has NO background experience of the situation.
*Context free rules and objectives attributes must be given to guide performance.
*There is difficulty discerning between relevant vs irrelevant aspects of situation.
* STUDENT NURSES
NOVICE
*Nurses at this level demonstrate a new ability to see changing Relevance in a situation, including recognition and implementation of skilled Responses to the situation as it evolves. *Nurses are more confident with their knowledge and abilities.
PROFICIENT
*The person can demonstrate marginally acceptable performance, having coped with enough real situations, or to have pointed out by a mentor.
*Nurses functioning at this level are guided by rules and are oriented by task completion.
ADVANCE BEGINNER
*Consistency, predictability and time management.
*Anxiety exists over learning and performing well without making mistakes
*Recognize Patterns (which elements of the situation warrant attention and which can be ignored)
*Prioritize and Plan
*Less supervision
COMPETENT
*Nurses have an intuitive grasp of the situation, and as being able to identify the region of the problem without losing time considering a range of alternative diagnoses and solutions.
*Expert nurses “know the patient.”
EXPERT

NOVICE
Key aspects of expert nurse:
- Demonstrating a clinical grasp and resource-based practice
- Possessing embodied know how
- Seeing the big picture
- Seeing the unexpected
