Prevalence of down syndrome
8 in 10,000 individuals in the United States
Oral findings with down syndrome
- Lips thickened, cracked, and dry
- Mouth breathing
- Tongue may be deeply fissured and appear large
- Palate may be narrow and vaulted
Common tooth anomalies with down syndrome
Delayed or irregular sequence of eruption
Congentially missing teeth
Irregularities in tooh formation: microdontia fused teeth
Occlusion with down syndrome
Class III and cross bite are common and relate to the flat face and underdevelopment of the midfacial region
Teeth may be spaced because certain anomalous teeth take less space
Perio and down syndrome
More prevelant and sever
Risk factors are: poor oral hygiene, malocclusion, bruxism, conical shaped roots, compromised immune system
Complex spectrum of developmental disorders marked by limitations in the ability to understand and communicate
Autism (ASD)
Characteristics of autism
- Impairment in social interaction
- Impairment in communication
- Restricted repetitive behavior and stereotyped patterns of behavior
- Delays or abnormal functioning before 3 years
Prevalence of autism
1 in 68 children
Appointment considerations for patients with autism
- Provide a predictable and consistent experience
- Create a quiet environment free from sensory stimuli; patients with autism may have sensitivity to light, sounds, touch, and smell.
- Desensitization/practice
- Use behavior guidance procedures when the patient is familiar with that method
- Physical immobilization
