check on every patient every hour
- pain (assess/intervene)
- potty (bathroom needs)
- position (in bed.chair.ambulate)
- possessions/periphary (call bell close, telephone, drink)
- pump (check IV pump)
How do you know if your patient is aspirating?
- coughing after drinking think liquids
- purposeful swallowing
- pocketing food in their mouth after swallowing
Bedside swallow evaluation by nurse (BEST)
- evaluate a patients risk for aspiration
- puree food trial (1st)
- liquid trial (2nd)
- failure at any stage the nurse should stop and refer for a speech therapy eval
RACE
PASS
Rescue anyone in immediate danger
Alarm/Activate fire code
Confine the fire by closing the doors and windows
Evacuate patients and other people to a safe area
