The goals of wound repair for lacerations and incisions are to:

What Phase of Wound Healing
Days 0-5: No gain in wound strength
Phase I - Initial Lag phase
What Phase of Wound Healing
Days 5-14: Rapid increase in wound strength occurs. At week 2, the wound has achieved only 7% of its final strength.
Phase II - Fibroplasia phase
What Phase of Wound Healing
Day 14 until healing is complete: Further connective tissue remodeling. Up to 80% of normal skin strength achieved.
Phase III - Final Maturation phase
Non-absorbable skin sutures or staples are used to give the wound strength during what phases

Indications for Wound Repair
(1) Lacerations that are open and less than 12 hours old (< 24 hours on the face).
(2) Repair of sites where a lesion has been surgically removed.
Contraindications for wound repair are:
(1) Wounds more than 12 hours old (> 24 hours old on the face)
(2) Animal and human bite wounds
(3) Puncture wounds
