Patient Reported Outcome Meaures Flashcards
Why measure health?
To have an indication of the need of healthcare
To target resources where they are most needed
To assess the effectiveness of health interventions
To evaluate the quality of health services
To use evaluations of effectiveness to get better value for money
To monitor patients’ progress
What are Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)?
Measures of health that come directly from the patients, they work by comparing scores before and after treatment or over longer-periods
What are the the 2 quality of life measuring instruments?
Generic and specific
What are the advantages of using generic instruments to measure QOL?
Can be used for a Broad range of health problems
Can be used if no disease- specific instruments
Enable comparisons across treatment groups
Can be used to assess health of populations
What are the disadvantages of using generic instruments for measuring QOL?
Generic nature means inherently less detailed
Loss of relevance
Can be less sensitive to change that occur as a result of an intervention
May be less acceptable to patients
Give some reasons why systematic reviews are useful for clinicians
Save clinicians from having to locate and appraise the studies for themselves
Offer authoritative, generalisable conclusions
Highlight gaps in research/poor quality research
May reduce delay between research discoveries and implementation
