Pathways of Glucose Metabolism Flashcards
Explain Glycolysis and its effect on glucose level
Metabolism of glucose to energy. It decreases blood glucose level
Explain Gluconeogenesis and its effect on glucose level
Formation of glucose from non-carbohydrate source (protein, amino acids/ lipids). This increases blood glucose level
Explain Glycogenolysis and its effect on glucose level
Glycogenolysis is the breakdown of glycogen (stored form of glucose). When glycogen is broken-down, it forms more glucose which increases glucose level in blood.
Explain Glycogenesis and its effect on glucose level
Formation of glycogen. It is the storage of excess glucose by converting glucose to glycogen, which decreases the level of glucose in the blood.
Explain Lipogenesis and its effect on glucose level
Conversion of carbohydrate to fatty acids . This decreases blood glucose level.
Explain Lipolysis and its effect on glucose level
Decomposition or breakdown of fats (occurs if glucose is insufficient/ absent). Fats will be utilized instead of glucose to form energy.
Why does ketosis result in comatose?
