Hypoglycemia Flashcards
Level of serum glucose concentration to be considered as Hypoglycemia
≤ 60 mg/dL
Explain why hypoglycemia is life-threatening
Brain is dependent in glucose. Low levels of blood glucose lead to impairment of brain function.
Diagnostic criteria of Hypoglycemia
Whipple’s Triad
Explain Whipple’s Triad
- Low Plasma glucose
- Symptoms consistent with hypoglycemia (in CNS)
- Relief of those symptoms if plasma glucose is raised
Classification of symptoms associated with CNS
- Neurogenic
- Neuroglycopenic
This also affect the autonomous nervous system
Neurogenic
This symptom occurs 4 hours after meal
Neurogenic symptoms
Neurogenic symptom is primarily found in which type of hypoglycemia?
Reactive/alimentary Hypoglycemia
Neurogenic symptoms: (4)
Tremors
Palpitations,
Anxiety
Diaphoresis
Symptoms associated with CNS with decreased glucose supply in the brain
Neuroglycopenic
This symptom occurs after 10 hours without food intake
Neuroglycopenic
Neuroglycopenic symptom is found in which type of hypoglycemia?
Fasting hypoglycemia
Neuroglycopenic symptoms: (5)
Blurred vision
Behavioral changes
Confusion
Dizziness
Tingling Sensation
Causes of hypoglycemia: (5)
- Alcohol consumption
- Severe Sepsis
- End-stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Cortisol and/or Growth Hormone Deficiencies
- Alimentary Hypoglycemia/ Reactive Hypoglycemia
Why does alcohol consumption cause hypoglycemia?
Alcohol can inhibit hepatic gluconeogenesis
(liver cells cannot convert other macromolecules into glucose).
Alcohol can increase glycogen phosphorylase
(an enzyme involved in glycogenesis)
