pathway of photosynthesis Flashcards
what happens in photosystem 2 p680
- Oxidizes water into electrons, protons, and oxygen gas (released for us!)
- Photon of light excites P680*, releasing an electron to primary acceptor and creating P680+
- P680 is highly electronegative (*) and water is oxidized leaving H+ and oxygen gas
how many times dose photosystem 2 p680 happen per each molecule
2 times per water molecule
what happens after PQ (protein) receives an electron from the primary acceptor
it moves the electron to the moves to “cytochrome complex” and, Energy carried in electron moves another H+ into the thylakoid
what happens from the cytochrome complex
energy is nearly gone and electron is shuttled through PC carrier to PSI
what happens in chlorophyll 1 P700
- A second photon is used to provide more energy
- This high energy electron is transferred along the chain and used to reduce NADP+ to NADPH (similar to NADH in cell. Respiration)
what does photosystem 2 do in photosystem 1
Photosystem I, cytochrome complex (PQ), Photosystem II create a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane
how is this gradient made
- Oxidation of water
- Carrying protons across with PQ
- Removal of protons from the stroma during reduction NADP+
Leads to ATP synthesis through ATP synthase!! Chemical energy from Light energy!!!
