Pathophysiology of Ageing Flashcards
What are the reasons for people getting older
Increased resources availability
Better economic conditions
Improved screening programs with earlier diagnosis and treatment
Better outcomes following cardiac, stroke and surgery
State the consequences of more people getting older
More people have several co-morbidities
State what is meant by selective survival
Healthier lifestyles are likely to survive to an older age
State the benefits of ageing
Increased experiential learning
State the neutral features of aging
Grey hair, pastime preference
State the detrimental effects of ageing
Hypertension, decreased reaction time
Describe the stochastic theory of ageing
Gradually accumulate damage over time, reactive oxygen accumulates, mechanical wearing out of system
Describe the programmed theory of ageing
At some point stop making growth hormones and therefore stop maintaining systems. Could be due to changes in gene expression during various stages.
Describe the variability of physiology of ageing
There is marked inter-individual variability in both development and magnitude of changes. This increases with age.
State the effects of ageing on the kidney
Reduced Creatinine Clearance - reduced muscle mass
State the effects of ageing on the respiratory system
Reduced lung capacity
State the effects of ageing on the CVS
Increased blood pressure
Medical Frailty
Progressive Dyshomeostasis
Describe the social dyshomeostasis that occurs in frailty
Loss of the ability to compensate for difficult in social. Social network systems break down over time.
State the presentation of hyperthyroidism in frailty
Depression, cognitive impairment, muscle weakness, AF, heart failure, angina
