Pathology of the ventricles, choroid plexus and CSF Flashcards
what different types of tumours can affect the ventricles and choroid plexus
colloid cyst, ependymomas, choroid plexus tumours
what is an ependymoma
tumour arising from the ependymal cells lining the ventricles
what is a ventricular haemorrhage
accumulation of blood in the ventricles
what is the difference between an epidural and subdural hematoma
epidural = arterial bleed between the skull and dura subdural = venous bleed between the dura and arachnoid
what is hydrocephalus
accumulation of CSF in the ventricular system or around the brain, either due to obstruction or over production
what happens subsequently to hydrocephalus
enlargement of one or more of the ventricles and increased intracranial pressure
what are the symptoms associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension/pseudotumor cerebri
headache, visual disturbances
what is papilloedema
optic disc swelling due to increased intracranial pressure transmitted to the subarachnoid space surrounding the optic nerve
what are some of the visual symptoms associated with papilloedema
enlarged blind spot, blurring of vision, visual obscuration and loss of vision
