Chorioretinitis Flashcards
what is chorioretinitis
inflammation of the choroid
what are the different types of chorioretinitis
CMV in Aids, HSV/HZV, endogenous(eg candida), toxoplasma gondii, toxocara canis(worm)
what treatment can be used for CMV in aids
no good treatment, IV or IVT gangiclovir or foscarnet
what is another name for HSK-HSV chorioretinitis
acute retinal necrosis
what treatment can be used for endogenous chorioretinitis
anti-virals oral/IV/IVT
what can be seen in presentation of endogenous chorioretinitis
Roth spots, disseminated embolic bacterial abscesses
what other conditions is endogenous chorioretinitis associated with
bacterial endocarditis or indwelling catheters including central lines
what type of infection causes toxoplasmosis chorioretinitis and where can you get it from
protozoan infection, congenital or acquired, contaminated soil or undercooked meat
what presentation is seen with toxoplasmosis chorioretinitis
mild flu like symptoms, in immunocompetent patients it enters latent phase with cyst forming
(very common)
what treatment is needed for toxoplasmosis chorioretinitis if sight-threatening
systemic treatment, clindamycin/azithromycin +/- steroids
what causes toxocara chorioretinitis
parasitic nemotode(roundworm), found in cats/dogs, cant replicate in humans so often self-limiting
what is formed in toxocara chorioretinitis and what problem can this cause, and what treatment can be used
granulomas, can lead to irreversible visual loss
no real treatment, can use steroids
