Pathology of Liver Flashcards
acute hepatitis
causes: viral, drug- induced, autoimmune or seronegative (no cause)
infection agents: Hep A/B/C/E, herpes, leptospires
hepatitis = inflammation
fulminant hepatitis
will quickly lead to acute liver failure
often caused by viral hepatitis
otherwise caused by drugs and toxins
jaundice, mental status changes, liver necrosis
hepatitis
necrosis spreads between central veins and portal tracts of hepatosites
caused by: Hep B,C,D, autoimmune hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis
chronic fibrosis
liver feels firm due to fibrosis
portal inflammation, interface hepatitis, lobular inflammation, fibrosis
fatty liver disease (steatosis)
reversible with anstinence, enlarged, yellow, greasy liver, can progress to fibrosis around central vein
alcohol liver disease
alcohol metabolism generates NADH which breaks down fatty acids and forms triglycerides which leads to steatosis
excessive stress from this can lead to heaptocyte injury and necro-inflammatory activity which causes liver fibrosis
