Pathology- Inflammation Flashcards
What enzyme degrades bradykinin?
Angiotensin Converting Enzyme - ACE
When the intrinsic pathway is inhibited, what other process is activated as well? What is the end product of that system?
Kininogen system –> end product is bradykinin
A complication of ACE inhibitors is angioedema; it also inhibits the metabolism of bradykinin. What is a side effect of this?
Bradykinin causes an increase in vessel permeability (causing angioedema- swelling of the tissues) and an unexplainable cough. Bradykinin also causes pain along with PGE2.
What factor do neutrophils and cancer cells share in order to cause basement membrane vascular permeability?
Type 4 collagenase (that’s how cancer cells metastasize)
By what mechanism do neutrophils travel once they pass the basement membrane?
They get directions in a process called chemotaxis. C5a and LT-B4 (leukotriene B4) are chemotactic agents.
