1
Q

2
Q

describe the pathology of cataracts

A

epithelium in the lens matures and cell contents are replaced and the nuclei disappears
cell outline is left and becomes a fibre
there is degenerative change to the fibre resulting in opacification

Q

define glaucoma

A

abnormal increase in pressure in the eye relating to the amount of vitreous and aqueous humour which normally drains through the trabecular meshwork

16
Q

describe dry ARMD

A

build-up of protein, lipids and inflammatory mediators called drusen

17
Q

describe wet ARMD

A

new vascularisation in choroid mediated by VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor)
new vessels are fragile and can leak
risk of vision loss

18
Q

why are diabetes more susceptible to cataracts?

A

increased sugar content in lens
conversion of glucose to sorbitol
altered osmotic gradients leading to swelling and fibre disruption

19
Q

presentation in diabetic retinopathy

A

arygll robertson pupil
peripheral neuropathy affects CNIII, IV and VI
blurred vision

20
Q

define rubeotic glaucoma

A

new vessel formation obstructing angle

21
Q

neoplasias

A

BCC
SCC
melanoma
retinal melanoma (not sun related, liver metastasis)
