A
clouding of the lens due to change in lens proteins (crystallins)

risk factors for cataracts
A
age congenital medication (steroids) hypocalcaemia smoking alcohol trauma metabolic disease (diabetes)

presentation
A
gradual vision loss that is hazy/ blurred
starbursts around lights at night-time
difficulty driving, reading, watching TV, etc.

Q
management
A
surgical removal with intra-ocular lens implant if symptomatic
can be left alone

diagnosis
A
loss of red reflex e.g. neonatal examination or photo flash

Q
complication of cataract surgery
A
endophthalmitis
requires immediate intravitreal antibiotics
